Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) is based on the patient’s postcode. This is taken from the SIMD 2009 Version 2 Scotland level population-weighted quintile (a quintile describes a fifth of a population). This is used to determine which areas are deemed the most deprived, with SIMD 1 being most deprived and SIMD 5 being least deprived.
Using the SIMD look-up, two potential responses may occur.
1 – SIMD area - for example "SIMD Area: 5"
2 - "No SIMD for this post code"
• New post codes that have not been assigned a SIMD value as yet;
• This post code does not exist;
• No deprivation information attached to the postcode.
If there is no SIMD value linked to the postcode then you must claim the codes linked to SIMD 4-5 only.
Return to the SIMD lookup.
