We provide regular reports to NHS Boards on the levels of NHS ophthalmic activity in their geographic areas. This is to help establish the probity of payments made on behalf of the Boards.
Boards must establish that the items of service claimed for are matched with the items of service provided to patients. This is part of the audit process. Also, treatments must have been provided in line with regulations.
Following discussion with the Board, we may carry out further checking of a practice’s prescribing levels, in line with the Payment Verification Protocol.
The checks usually consist of:
The examination of record cards will usually be carried out as part of a practice visit, pre-arranged with the you.
We also monitor expenditure levels and provide information and ad hoc reports for NHS Boards and the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates.

If these checks reveal issues of probity then the case will be referred to the relevant NHS Board and NHS Counter Fraud Services.
Audit is a routine activity and all NHS Boards are required to carry this work out to give assurance that public money is being spent appropriately.
