Practitioner Services - Enabling Primary Care

Schedule 10 (the Black List)

Drugs and other substances not to be supplied by General Medical Practitioners or prescribed for supply under pharmaceutical services.

There are some restrictions on what can be prescribed on a prescription or GP10A form. Schedule 10 to the NHS (General Medical Services) Regulations 1992 list drugs and other substances not to be prescribed under the NHS pharmaceutical services. This list is commonly referred to as 'The Black List'. If a prescription is dispensed for an item on the Black List, Practitioner Services will not reimburse the dispensing contractor for that item.

To determine whether an item should be “Black Listed” PSD will apply the following criteria:

  • If the “Black List” details name only – all strengths, formulations, flavours, etc can be deemed to be on the blacklist; e.g. “Build-Up (Nestle Health Care)”.
  • If the “Black List” details name and formulation – all strengths can be deemed to be on the blacklist; e.g. “Algipan Tablets”.
  • If the “Black List” details name, formulation and strength – only that combination can be deemed to be on the blacklist; e.g. “Almazine Tablets 1mg”.
  • If the “Black List”  details name and flavour - only that combination can be deemed to be on the “Black List”, all other flavours would be acceptable; e.g. “Rite-Diet Gluten-free Date and Walnut Cake”.
  • If the “Black List”  details name, formulation and flavour - only that combination can be deemed to be on the blacklist, all other flavours would be acceptable; e.g. “Asilone Orange Tablets”.
  • If the “Black List” details name and specifies pack, this pack is on the blacklist, but other packs would be acceptable; e.g. “Zirtek 7”.
  • If a generic, that is not on the “Black list”, is endorsed with an item that is on the “Black List” e.g. Cod Liver Oil endorsed Seven Seas, the item will be rejected unpaid.
